Custom Orthotics

Chronic foot, ankle or heel pain? Difficulty walking or running? Suffering from such foot problems as plantar fasciitis, bursitis or tendinitis? Or struggling with carpal tunnel syndrome, wrist tendonitis, or a repetitive motion disorder? Recovering from complicated hand surgery?

While over-the-counter orthotics are available and may be helpful, they aren't custom made to fit your unique structure. Custom orthotics designed to match the precise contours of your wrist, hand or feet can often resolve abnormal movements or protect over-stressed or healing joints and tendons.

Who might be a good candidate for custom orthotics?

Patients with a wide range of conditions are referred by their physicians to our Hand Team or Orthopedic Team for custom orthotics. Conditions we treat include:

    For the ankle and foot:
  • Plantar fascitis or heel pain
  • Tendonitis (inflamed tendons)
  • Arthritis
  • High arches or flat feet
  • Neuromas
    For the upper extremity:
  • Fractures of the elbow, forearm, wrist or hand
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Tendonitis of the elbow, wrist or hand
  • Post-surgical procedures, including tendon repairs and joint replacement
  • Traumatic injuries

Customized for you

Just like prescription eye wear, which is designed for your specific visual impairment, custom-made orthotics are designed to support and gently reposition the heel, arch, muscles, ligaments, tendons and bones in your feet, hands or wrists. The goal is to make sure these structures work together naturally, as they are supposed to, helping ensure that all of your activities are safe and pain-free.

Once we have a prescription from your doctor, one of our occupational or physical therapists will do a thorough analysis of your condition. For foot orthotics, your physical therapist will then cast a three-dimensional molding of each foot before sending it out to the lab for fabrication. Your orthotics can be designed to fit in dress shoes, athletic shoes, boots and even skates. Hand, wrist or elbow orthotics are fabricated by your occupational therapist right here in our Hand Clinic. Our custom orthotics are made with comfortable thermoplastic materials using the latest fabrication technologies. They are much less expensive than orthotics from other custom manufacturers and guaranteed to last for years.
